The past year alone has witnessed a remarkable 30 percent increase in payphone calls to Lifeline, highlighting the essential role of this service.


Telstra's data also showcases a substantial rise in calls to mental health and emergency services, Centrelink's Indigenous call center, major banks, and the Salvation Army's Assistance Line. This indicates that the availability of free payphones has greatly benefited vulnerable individuals seeking support.


The initiative has garnered praise from figures like Salvation Army Commanding Officer Brendan Nottle, who lauds the access to free payphones for providing crucial connections to vital services. With approximately 15,000 free public payphones, including those with free Wi-Fi, distributed throughout Australia, this initiative continues to positively impact the lives of those in need.
